C.Y. Liu, an internationally recognized leader and pioneer in gynecological endoscopic surgery (laparoscopic, robotic, and hysteroscopic surgery) since the late 1980s and he has performed his first total laparoscopic hysterectomy in 1990, he also has developed a number of laparoscopic procedures.
Because of the pivotal role of the laparoscope in increasing the understanding of female pelvic floor anatomy, Dr. Liu’s contribution to the field intertwines with the history of gynecological endoscopic surgery.
In January of 1991, Dr. Liu performed the first laparoscopic Burch colposuspension, and the following year he performed the first laparoscopic vaginal/uterovaginal suspension by utilizing the proximal uterosacral ligament at the level of the Ischia spine. By the mid 1990’s, he held the world record for having performed the most laparoscopic hysterectomies. Additional contributions include the development of numerous laparoscopic procedures for reparative work, among which are techniques for laparoscopic site-specific defects repair for cystoceles caused by paravaginal defect and transverse defect, as well as enterocele repair by first clearly identifying and then re-attaching the broken edges of endopelvic fasciae. His experience also includes extensive work in the laparoscopic excisional management for severe infiltrating fibrotic endometriosis, laparoscopic surgery of bladder, ureter, and bowels for gynecologic indications, tubo-ovarian reconstruction, as well as other laparoscopic fertility-promoting procedures.
In 1997, he established the first fellowship program in the U.S. for gynecological endoscopic surgery at the Chattanooga Women’s Minimally Invasive Gynecology, where for the past 25 years his practice has been devoted exclusively to gynecological endoscopic surgery. As one of the most sought-after surgeons for the performance of interactive live surgical demonstrations at international meetings, he has also conducted hundreds of workshops internationally as well as a continuous OR preceptorship program in Chattanooga. As a result, thousands of major endoscopic surgeons throughout the world have trained under him.
Dr. Liu holds extensive professional publication and presentation credits. In 2001, he was awarded the prestigious Outstanding Gynecologic Endoscopic Surgeon in the World by the European Gynecologic Endoscopic Society for recognition of his achievements and excellence. He served as the President of American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists 2009 2010. His board memberships include the American Association of the Gynecologic Laparoscopists; Editorial Board of Gynecological Endoscopy; Medical Advisory Board of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists and of the Journal of Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons; Review Boards of Obstetrics and Gynecology, American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology, Gynecologic Endoscopy, Journal of the American Association of Gynecologic Laparoscopists, the Journal of Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons; and Advisory Board for Innovations in Medical Education and Training. In addition to contributing chapters in more than 15 textbooks, Dr. Liu edited the textbook, Laparoscopic Hysterectomy and Pelvic Floor Reconstruction.
A graduate of Taipei Medical University, Dr. Liu completed his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Medical Center in Chicago. He is a Professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, University of Tennessee, School of Medicine at COE Campus. The Director Emeritus, Fellowship Program in Minimally Invasive Gynecology, Chattanooga, Tennessee. Currently, Dr. Liu has a private practice in Manhattan, New York City.
